A Year from Now…Will you be Celebrating?

The first half of 2017 is nearly in the books! Do you have a clear picture of how you want this year to end? What goals have you set for yourself and your business? Are they measurable? Are they written down somewhere? Have you shared them with someone who will keep you accountable?

The process of creating and finishing a successful year does not happen by accident. It is not a series of ‘right place right time’ events. It takes hard work and real effort to not only put together your desired outcomes, but to make those outcomes a reality.

Here is where business planning separates the winners from the mediocre. I hear from business owners who get hung up on what business planning is, and missing the real value that planning can bring to their own bottom line. Business planning is all about preparation for a successful outcome. It is a continuous recognition that a) the marketplace is always changing, and you need to change with it, and b) that you don’t and can’t know everything. Planning helps take much of the guesswork out of running your business. It helps keep you and your team on your toes, focused on a common, well-defined goal.

Business planning is more than an academic exercise, a business ‘term paper’ if you will, that gets finished and ends up on a shelf somewhere. Sometimes business plans are required to accomplish a specific objective, such as obtain funding or attract an investor. But the real power of a planning approach goes well beyond that. Remember, it is not the PLAN, but the PLANNING that matters the most. The plan is simply the result of the planning process, and it is the process that produces the greatest benefit.

So why plan? Simple. To be better. To improve our odds of success by considering the path ahead. To be precise about what we want, and why we want it. To determine in advance what actions will be required to get the outcome we want.

When I speak to business owners who are hesitant about getting the help they need, I point out the fact that a year from now, they will wish they had started today.

It’s always a good time to plan. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to improve your odds of success! Plan now to be celebrating accomplishing your goals this year!
